Ultrashort Pulse Laser Technology

Pico- and femtosecond lasers produce markings without thermal material input — deep-black, corrosion-free, and permanently readable. Standard fibre lasers cannot achieve these results.

Ultrashort pulse lasers operate with extremely short pulse durations in the picosecond and femtosecond range. Pulse durations lie between 20 picoseconds (10⁻¹² seconds) and under 400 femtoseconds (10⁻¹⁵ seconds) — so short that the material has no time to conduct heat to its surroundings before the pulse is already complete. The result is precise material processing without thermal stress: no heat-affected zone, no melting, no material distortion.

For laser marking and laser engraving, this means marking quality that standard fibre lasers technically cannot achieve. Fibre lasers operate in the nanosecond range and inevitably create melt zones that can lead to burr formation, micro-cracks, and surface changes — characteristics that are not tolerable in medical technology, aerospace, and high-precision CNC manufacturing.

As an ultrashort pulse laser service provider, we have operated exclusively systems of this technology class since 2017. Today we have four UKP systems — two picosecond and two femtosecond laser systems — with a total capacity of 50,000 parts per week. All systems are integrated into a quality management system certified to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 and DIN EN ISO 13485:2021.

Our TRUMPF Laser Systems

Picosecond

TRUMPF TruMicro Mark (Picosecond)

The TRUMPF TruMicro Mark picosecond laser is the core system of our series production for black marking and UDI labelling in medical technology. The system operates at a wavelength of 1,030 nm, an output power of 10 W, and adjustable pulse durations of 20 picoseconds. A beam quality of M² < 1.3 ensures the smallest possible focal diameter and therefore high marking precision with minimal thermal load. Minimum character heights of 0.2 mm and positioning tolerances of ±0.05 mm.

Specifications

  • —Wavelength: 1,030 nm
  • —Output power: 10 W
  • —Pulse duration: 20 ps
  • —Beam quality: M² < 1.3
  • —Min. character height: 0.2 mm
  • —Positioning tolerance: ±0.05 mm
3D · Femtosecond

TRUMPF TruMicro Mark 1020 (3D, Femtosecond)

The TRUMPF TruMicro Mark 1020 is our most advanced system and the centrepiece of our 3D marking capability. With femtosecond pulse durations under 400 fs and two integrated cameras, it enables fully automatic part alignment and code validation directly in the process. The moving lens dynamically compensates for height differences. Integrated VisionLine image processing reads DataMatrix codes immediately after marking. Also processes demanding materials including medical-grade PEEK, ceramics, glass, and piezoceramics.

Specifications

  • —Pulse duration: < 400 fs
  • —Two integrated industrial cameras
  • —Automatic part alignment
  • —DataMatrix validation via VisionLine
  • —Full 3D marking on complex geometries
  • —Rotary axis: Ø 1–250 mm, up to 5 kg
Redundancy System

UKP Picosecond Redundancy System

As a fourth system, we operate an additional UKP picosecond laser serving as a redundancy system. This system ensures that production downtime due to maintenance or unplanned stoppages does not cause delivery delays. When one system is taken out for maintenance, production continues on the remaining systems — without capacity interruption.

Specifications

  • —Same UKP picosecond technology class
  • —Ensures delivery reliability
  • —No capacity interruption for customers
  • —Available for maintenance switchover
